The Loomis Chaffee School, formed by the merger of the Loomis Institute (founded 1874) and the Chaffee School (founded 1926), is one of the premier coeducational boarding schools in the United States. Located in Windsor, Connecticut โ America's oldest English settlement, founded in 1633 โ Loomis Chaffee occupies a stunning 300-acre campus along the banks of the Connecticut River, approximately 10 miles north of Hartford and 25 miles north of New Haven.
The campus is one of the most beautiful of any New England boarding school. The Connecticut River forms the western boundary of the campus, and the school's boathouse and riverside trails create a setting of exceptional natural beauty. Georgian and Colonial Revival buildings anchor the campus's historic core, while modern facilities for science, arts, and athletics complement the traditional architecture. The library, the chapel (a gem of Connecticut church architecture), and the dining hall โ one of the finest at any secondary school โ are particular points of pride.
Loomis Chaffee enrolls approximately 760 students from 38 states and 37 countries. The school's international diversity is genuine and intentional: students from South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Spain, France, Germany, Brazil, Turkey, and many other countries create a globally representative community. Approximately 30% of students come from outside the United States. The school's language program โ with instruction available in Mandarin, Spanish, French, Latin, and Arabic โ reflects its global orientation.
The academic program is among the strongest of any New England boarding school. Loomis Chaffee offers over 200 courses and has particular strengths in mathematics, sciences, and the performing arts. The school's research science program โ in which students design and conduct original research under the mentorship of faculty and university partners โ is exceptional, regularly producing work of publishable quality. Loomis Chaffee students are admitted to the world's most selective universities in large numbers each year.
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Campus Center, opened in recent years, serves as the social heart of the school. The Founders Hall performing arts complex โ housing a 500-seat proscenium theater, black box theater, music practice rooms, and visual arts studios โ supports an arts program of unusual ambition and quality. The athletics complex includes an Olympic-quality aquatic center, a hockey rink, tennis courts, squash courts, and extensive outdoor athletic facilities.
The school's location near Bradley International Airport (BDL) โ just 15โ25 minutes from campus โ makes it exceptionally accessible for international families. Windsor itself is centrally located in the Connecticut River Valley, approximately halfway between New Haven and Springfield, Massachusetts. Hartford's cultural institutions โ the Wadsworth Atheneum (the oldest public art museum in the United States), the Mark Twain House, the Hartford Stage โ are just minutes away.
