Blair Academy, founded in 1848, is one of the most respected boarding schools in the northeastern United States. Located in the charming village of Blairstown, New Jersey โ in the Kittatinny Mountains of Warren County, near the Delaware Water Gap โ Blair Academy occupies a spectacular 457-acre campus of Victorian and Georgian architecture set amid forested hillsides, with breathtaking views over the New Jersey highlands.
Blair enrolls approximately 450 students from over 30 countries in grades 9 through postgraduate. The school's relatively small size is one of its great strengths: with fewer than 500 students, Blair can offer an unusually personal educational experience where every student knows every faculty member, and the administration knows every student by name. The student-to-faculty ratio is approximately 6:1, and all students live on campus.
The academic program is demanding and student-centered. Blair offers 120+ courses across all disciplines, with particular strengths in the arts, humanities, and sciences. The school's Writing Program is particularly distinguished โ Blair students consistently produce work of exceptional quality, and the program develops skills that serve students throughout their lives. Advanced and honors courses are available across all departments, and the school's college placement reflects the quality of preparation students receive.
The arts are a defining characteristic of Blair. The Blair arts program โ encompassing visual arts, music, theater, dance, and creative writing โ is exceptional for a school of its size. The Pendergast Fine Arts Center houses professional-quality performance and studio spaces. Blair's theater program produces ambitious full-scale productions, and the school's visual arts students regularly exhibit at the professional level. Music ensembles โ jazz band, orchestra, chamber ensembles โ perform throughout the year.
Athletics at Blair are competitive and wide-ranging. The school fields teams in 24 sports and has particular traditions of excellence in soccer, basketball, tennis, and Nordic skiing. Blair's trails through the surrounding Kittatinny Mountains support cross-country running and skiing teams, and the outdoor environment is integral to life at the school.
The setting in Blairstown is genuinely beautiful. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area โ one of the great natural areas of the northeastern United States โ is minutes from campus, offering hiking, kayaking, and outdoor experiences unavailable to students at urban schools. The surrounding New Jersey highlands are particularly stunning in autumn.
Blair's international community is notable. Students from South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, and many other countries create a genuinely global community on campus. Approximately 25% of students come from outside the United States.
